Don’t Drink your Calories - Hunger & Thirst Are 2 Different things .

Don’t Drink your Calories -

Hunger & Thirst Are 2 Different things .

1. Facts about thirst-

Thirst – the conscious desire for water.14.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt"">

A thirsty person receive relief from thirst immediately after drinking water even before the
water has been absorbed from the G .I. Tract.

If the water does enter the stomach, distention of the stomach and other portion of the upper

Gastrointestinal tract provides still further temporary relief from thirst.

After a person has drunk water as long as 1\2 to 1 hour may be required for all the water to be
absorbed and distributed throughout the
body . Were the thirst sensation not temporarily relieved after drinking water,
the person would continue to drink more and more.

Having said that , it matters the most with
what the thirst is relieved . For
generations
12.0pt"">water 12.0pt""> was only thirst reliever . Since
it does not have any calories it never adds to obesity . But with
so many sugar sweetened drinks , colas , juices easily available that adds to
excess calories . People develop appetite to this drinks and hence add calories
misleading it with thirst reliever .The
amount of calories
these drinks have are
really heavy . Above all , generation next
just sit in coffee / cola bars
for hours drinking
loads of them on and on .

2. Facts about hunger -

Hunger - Demand for calories / energy.

Hunger – craving for food .

Person who has not had food for many hours the stomach undergoes intense rhythmic contraction called hunger contractions.

Appetite – demand for a particular food.

Appetite – appetite in often
used in the same sense as hunger except that it usually implies desire
for

Specific types of food instead of food in general. Therefore appetite helps a
person choose the quality of food to eat.

Satiety – Inhibitions of further intake of a food and meal
after eating has ended.

If a person is deprived of food, he becomes
hungry and if he has eaten a lot, he becomes satiated.

3. Hunger & Thirst – Hunger & thirst
are two different , but they are
both the language of keen intense desire . Lifestyle factors ensure that
appetite & thirst are both powerful
but poorly controlled stimulus to
eat or drink even when not hungry or relieved from thirst because feeding &
drinking patterns are influenced strongly by psychological , social , economic
factors. Even though
person may feel satiated by one particular food & or drink , they still will
continue to eat when a new food & or drink is presented – a
phenomenon that is referred to as ‘ Sensory specific satiety ‘. When psychosocial
incentives to eat & or drink are
removed , human beings can control
food intake quite precisely.

4. Physiologically ( Medically ) Hunger & Thirst are controlled by 2 different centers in
brain . Both have different ways to stimulate or inhibit their center. It
should be never ever confused with each other .

5. Clinically thirst would seem to have nothing to do with obesity . Water , which makes up 60% to 65% of body weight , is the
most variable component , and the state of hydration can
induce fluctuations of several pounds .
However , true weight loss and
excessive weight gain are associated primarily with a change in the size of the fat depots

But practically yes , cause – 1. thirst if not relieved
with water but with sugar sweetened drinks , colas , juices etc

2. thirst if misread as
hunger, will add excess unwanted calories .

6. Logically
, if water is taken with meals , it dilutes the digestive juices &
impairs digestion . But , moderate amounts of water , say 200ml , taken with
meals have no harmful effects . Soups , milk , and much of our so called solid
foods like cucumber , tomatoes and fruits contain a large proportion of water ,
but these are regularly taken with no untoward effects. But, no bother they
have good quality nutrients , these
liquids & or semisolids have calories / energy which can give the fullness
effect very late . Problem arises when these are replaced by beverages having
good amount of calories with no specific nutrients . Under social circumstances
, beverages are first to serve ,hence adding to extra energy if not controlled
,misleading with thirst .

Bottom line
is hunger & thirst are 2 different
things . Eat when you are hungry , drink water when you are thirsty . Eating
while you are thirsty adds to your
weight. Drinking beverages
while eating even adds to your weight . So don’t drink your calories
.
